Slipping of a histidine improved the peroxidase activity of a de novo designed polypeptide packing an iron porphyrin

Polypeptides with two histidines and an iron porphyrin (1H⁴⁰-7H⁴⁶) were synthesized with a variety of positions of a histidine. In 4H⁴³, histidine (H⁴³) was in the hydrophobic region of an α-helix. The other polypeptides were of slightly or substantially distorted conformation. In the pH 7.2 buffer solution, two histidines of the polypeptide coordinated the iron porphyrin regardless of their positions. Some polypeptides (1H⁴⁰, 3H⁴², and 5H⁴⁴) showed an enhanced catalytic activity in the peroxidase reaction using cumene hydroperoxide compared to that of 4H⁴³, whereas some polypeptides (2H⁴¹ and 6H⁴⁵) were ineffective catalysts. The distortion of the peptide conformation by the addition of MeOH was also effective for the peroxidase reaction.     

Output and picosecond amplification characteristics of an efficient and high-power discharge excimer laser

Improvements in output pulse energy and efficiency of a conventional capacitor-transfer-type discharge excimer laser with automatic preionization have been achieved by extending the discharge volume and resulting moderate pumping of the active medium. The discharge laser produces a pulse energy of more than 1 J for XeCl, KrF, and ArF lasers in square beams of about 2×2 cm², and the maximum overall efficiency observed is 2.9% for XeCl, 3.2% for KrF and 1.8% for ArF. The laser device has been involved in a picosecond ( 32 ps) XeCl laser amplification system, and was operated as an amplifier at a repetitive frequency of 10 Hz. Recent progress in the improvement of hydrothermal stability of zeolites

Zeolites have been successfully employed in many catalytic reactions of industrial relevance. The severe conditions required in some processes, where high temperatures are frequently combined with the presence of steam, highlight the need of considering the evolution of the catalyst structure during the reaction. This review attempts to summarize the recently developed strategies to improve the hydrothermal framework stability of zeolites.

On-line purification for the determination of catecholamines by liquid chromatography

An on-line purification method for catecholamines was studied using a flow system equipped with an alumina microcolumn. The procedure involves catecholamine adsorption, column washing and catecholamine elution steps. The system is designed not to decompose catecholamines under alkaline conditions in the adsorption step. Flow-rates and times for different solutions delivered in each step (alkaline buffer for adsorption, water for washing and an acidic solution for elution), column length and sample volume to be loaded were systematically investigated by liquid chromatography. Under optimum conditions, norepinephrine, epinephrine, dopamine and 3,4- dihydroxybenzylamine (internal standard) can be purified with recoveries of ? 90% within 11 min with manual operation. This method was efficiently applied to urine samples and the results indicate the possibility that catecholamines in biological samples are automatically purified.     

Multiaxial mechanical behavior of aramid fibers and identification of skin/core structure from single fiber transverse compression testing

The transverse and longitudinal mechanical properties of aramid fibers like Kevlar? 29 (K29) fibers are strongly linked to their highly oriented structure. Mechanical characterization at the single fiber scale is challenging especially when the diameter is as small as 15 µm. Longitudinal tensile tests on single K29 fibers and single fiber transverse compression test (SFTCT) have been developed. Our approach consists of coupling morphological observations and mechanical experiments with SFTCT analysis by comparing analytical solutions and finite element modeling. New insights on the analysis of the transverse direction response are highlighted. Systematic loading/unloading compression tests enable to experimentally determine a transverse elastic limit. Taking account of the strong anisotropy of the fiber, the transverse mechanical response sheds light on a skin/core architecture. More importantly, results suggest that the skin of the fiber, typically representing a shell of one micrometer in thickness, has a transverse apparent modulus of 0.2 GPa. That is around more than fifteen times lower than the transverse modulus of 3.0 GPa in the core. By comparison, the measured longitudinal modulus is about 84 GPa. The stress distribution in the fiber is explored and the critical areas for damage initiation are discussed. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Effect of C7-Substituent on Self-Assembly of Chlorosomal Chlorophylls

Abstract

Bacteriochlorophyll d analogues that possessed a series of bulky substituents of OMe, OCOMe, and OCO ^t Bu at the C7¹-position were synthesized (Zn-complexes of methyl 7¹-substituted-3-(1-hydroxy-methyl)pyropheophorbide a). Aggregation behavior of these pigments was examined in comparison with a natural-type compound (C7¹-H) to elucidate the effects of size of the C7¹-moiety on self-assembly of the chlorins. These C7¹-substituted Zn-chlorins formed self-aggregates in 1% THF/hexane. The aggregates gave almost the same visible absorption bands, especially a ca. 2000-cm^?1 red-shifted Q_y peak; the spectra were essentially similar to those of the natural-type Zn-chlorin (C7¹-H). All the aggregates of the C7¹-substituted compounds showed similar exciton-type CD couplets in the red-shifted Q_y region, which were different from the feature of the couplet of the C7¹-H Zn-chlorin aggregate. These spectral data suggested that the C7¹-moiety did not interrupt the intermolecular linkages between chlorin molecules but altered the supramolecular structure which influences the long-range chirality.

The aims of this paper is to prove that every closed connected orientable 3-manifold with an orientation-preserving periodic diffeomorphism contains infinitely many, setwise invariant, spatial graphs whose exteriors are hyperbolic 3-manifolds.     

Formation of polyketone particle structure by hexafluoroisopropanol solvent evaporation and effects of plasticizer addition

Few solvents are capable of dissolving polyketones (PKs). 1,1,1,3,3,3‐Hexafluoro‐2‐propanol (hexafluoroisopropanol, HFIP) is a better solvent than trifluoroethanol and m‐cresol. When HFIP was evaporated from a PK/HFIP solution, a porous cast‐film with a microparticle structure was formed because the isotactic PKs adopted a helical conformation, and convection during evaporation of the high polarity and low‐boiling‐point HFIP caused aggregation and rolling of the polymer molecules. The addition of plasticizer suppressed particle formation, improving the surface structure and mechanical properties of the film. In particular, the dielectric properties of the film improved significantly. This will enable PKs, which are rigid insulating materials, to be used as dielectric materials, broadening their range of applications. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym.
